York Music Education has grown from the local authority music service into an independent Community Interest Company with deep roots in York's schools, families and cultural life.
Each year brings many hundreds of beginners, returning musicians and young people ready for their next step. Together, they form a much bigger story of many thousands of musical journeys across York since 1996.
Supporting the people who teach
York Music Education is York's largest employer of specialist music teachers. Protecting that skilled local workforce matters as much as supporting today's students: secure pathways for teachers preserve experience, continuity and musical opportunity for future generations.
Our journey
- 1996
When York became a unitary authority, local provision separated from North Yorkshire County Council's Performing Arts Service to become a dedicated York Music Service.
- 2000s
York Arts Education reflected a broader remit across music, drama and dance. As national funding changed, the organisation's focus increasingly returned to music.
- 2012
We brought more than 20 schools and over 25 cultural partners together to help establish York Music Hub under the first National Plan for Music Education.
- 2017
The service completed its spin-out from City of York Council and became York Arts Education CIC, preserving local expertise and delivery in a new not-for-profit organisation.
- 2024
We became York Music Education CIC, a name that describes our purpose clearly. The national Hub restructure also brought York into the wider North Yorkshire and York Music Hub.
- Today
Around 30 professional tutors support lessons, ensembles, schools, instrument hire, projects and progression across York.
Partnership has always mattered
Our work has included the Huntington Sheet Music Library, the York Cultural Award-winning Big Sing, city-wide performances at major York venues, Minster Minstrels with the National Centre for Early Music, I Can Play! for deaf children, Late Music Education, Yorchestra and collaborative projects with schools across the city.
York Music Centre has been based at Millthorpe School for more than 15 years, providing a consistent home for weekly ensembles and a progression route from first experiences through to York Youth Orchestra.
