York Music Education offers a low-cost instrument hire service for children and young people across York — perfect for getting started straight away! Our aim is to ensure every child has the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, develop confidence, and enjoy making music with others.
We hold a wide range of instruments in stock, and we’re happy to offer advice on purchasing your own instrument if and when the time is right.
Free Hire for Families on Low Income
We’re committed to removing financial barriers to music education. Families on low incomes may be eligible for free instrument hire.
You may qualify if your child:

Is eligible for Pupil Premium (ask your school for a letter of confirmation)

Is looked after by the local authority (in care or a care leaver)
This service is supported using public funding by Arts Council England via the music hub for North Yorkshire and York.
How to Hire an Instrument
Instrument hire is managed from York Music Centre at Millthorpe School.
Please make an appointment before visiting the school.

We will confirm availability and arrange a collection appointment with you.
Payment
We prefer to collect payment by Direct Debit (monthly or termly), which makes things simple for everyone.
You’ll receive invoices and reminders by email. Schools can be invoiced termly in advance.

Charges are per month and due in advance:
