Supporting inclusive music education in York

The Friends of York Music Centre is a registered charity (no. 1180192) dedicated to supporting young people’s access to music through bursaries, instrument hire, and ensemble support.

We work in close partnership with York Music Education CIC, helping ensure that no student is excluded from taking part due to financial hardship.

Over the past year, Friends funding has:

  • Provided over £2,400 in bursaries to disadvantaged students

  • Supported access to the York Youth Orchestra and other ensembles

  • Contributed to new equipment and transport for performances

Our priorities for 2025–26 include:

  • Increasing bursary support for Pupil Premium students

  • Supporting ensemble development and performance opportunities

  • Working with local funders and donors to reduce barriers to participation

Support from Friends of York Music Centre

Thanks to the generosity of the Friends of York Music Centre, students and their families are regularly offered free tickets to attend performances by the York Symphony Orchestra – a respected semi-professional ensemble. This opportunity enables our young musicians to experience live orchestral music in a high-quality setting, helping to inspire and develop their musical journey.

Sheet Music Sharing Scheme

We also run a Sheet Music Sharing Scheme to encourage sustainability and community support at the Music Centre.

Parents, students and teachers are welcome to:

  • Browse, take or exchange sheet music they no longer need

  • Find exam pieces, solo works, ensemble scores and more

  • Make a small donation to the Friends if they feel able — every contribution helps us support more young musicians
