York Music Education provides instrumental tuition and music clubs in partnership with primary and secondary schools across the City of York.

We support schools in offering high-quality music opportunities to their pupils — whether that’s through curriculum-time instrumental lessons or exciting clubs that run before or after the school day.

Instrumental Tuition in Schools

We work closely with school leaders to deliver individual, paired, or small-group tuition on a range of instruments, including:

  • Strings (violin, viola, cello)

  • Woodwind (flute, clarinet, saxophone)

  • Brass (trumpet, trombone, French horn)

  • Guitar and ukulele

  • Keyboard and piano

  • Percussion and drum kit

  • Voice

Our tutors are employed staff and experienced, fully DBS-checked musicians, trained to work with children at all stages of learning — from absolute beginners to advanced players.

Lessons typically take place during the school day, and we aim to be flexible around timetables, assemblies and events. We also support schools with:

  • Pupil Premium-funded places

  • Instrument hire

  • Exam preparation (ABRSM, Trinity, Rockschool)

What does it cost?

Individual Tuition

  • 15-minute lesson – £26.25 per month (£105.00 per term)

  • 30-minute lesson – £52.50 per month (£210.00 per term)

  • Lessons are invoiced monthly in advance via SpeedAdmin

  • Tuition is available in a wide range of instruments and voice

How to sign-up

  3. We’ll confirm your place and help with bursaries or instrument hire if required.

After-School and Lunchtime Clubs

We also offer a growing number of after-school and lunchtime music clubs, tailored to each school’s needs. Clubs might include:

  • Ukulele or guitar groups

  • Choirs and singing clubs

  • Drumming or percussion ensembles

  • Music technology or songwriting sessions

  • Beginner band clubs or ‘First Access’ follow-ups

Clubs can be fully funded by schools, part-funded by parents, or supported through grants and bursaries depending on your circumstances.

For clubs funded directly by parents, the cost is £24 per month, which also includes free access to any First Access ensemble at York Music Centre. This makes it excellent value for children who would like to continue their musical journey by joining sessions on Wednesday evenings or Saturday mornings.

Safeguarding and KCSIE Compliance

As an employer of music tutors, York Music Education CIC takes its safeguarding responsibilities seriously. All our tutors:

  • Hold an enhanced DBS check with barred list clearance

  • Receive annual safeguarding and child protection training

  • Follow our organisation-wide safeguarding policy in line with KCSIE (Keeping Children Safe in Education)

We also provide each school with a named contact and assurance documentation to support your Single Central Record and compliance requirements.

Accessible & Inclusive Provision

We believe music is for everyone. We work with schools to support:

  • Pupils with SEND

  • EAL learners

  • Children who may benefit from emotional, social, or wellbeing support through music
