In Summer 2021, York Music Education organised a special week-long Summer School designed to help children and young people reconnect with music after the long period of lockdowns and social restrictions. The need for shared, creative experiences was greater than ever, and the response from students, families, and tutors was truly inspiring.

Although York Music Education normally operates during term time only, we recognised that this was an extraordinary moment for our musical community. To ensure we complemented rather than competed with existing opportunities, we worked closely with Yorchestra, which traditionally runs orchestral courses during the holidays. Together, we created a programme that offered something new and inclusive for young musicians across the city.

The Summer School offered a vibrant mix of activities for all ages and abilities, including:

  • Beginner workshops in ukulele, Trash Bang, and steel pans

  • Digital music-making sessions using iPads

  • Ensembles for strings, brass, and woodwind players

  • A full Orchestral Experience, conducted by Ben Crick

  • A lively Choral Day, bringing singers together for a day of vocal workshops and performance

A particular highlight was a composition project led by local composer Kate Pearson, who collaborated with members of the York Youth Orchestra to create an original piece of music during the week. The energy, imagination, and teamwork shown by the students made the project a real celebration of creativity and resilience.

The Summer School was a huge success — not only musically, but socially and emotionally. It helped rebuild confidence, friendships, and a sense of belonging that had been missing during the months of isolation.
