York Music Centre – Overview
York Music Centre is the beating heart of our out-of-school music activity — a vibrant, inclusive and welcoming community of young musicians from across York and surrounding areas. It runs every Saturday morning and Wednesday evenings, during term time, at Millthorpe School, offering high-quality ensemble experiences for children and young people aged 3 to 21.
We offer a full progression pathway from Early Years to Youth Orchestra and everything in between. Our wide-ranging programme includes orchestras, concert bands, jazz and folk ensembles, theory classes, keyboard groups, percussion, recorders and early music – all under one roof. This rich mix allows students to build their skills, confidence and friendships in a supportive environment, guided by experienced and passionate tutors.

Instrument hire for students at the Music Centre and in schools across York

A friendly café and tuck shop, run by Friends of York Music Centre, offering refreshments and a place for families to connect
A single membership fee entitles students to join as many ensembles as they like. We welcome complete beginners through to advanced players (Grade 8+), and we provide bursaries and instrument hire to ensure no child misses out.

Our programme is managed using the SpeedAdmin platform, giving parents, tutors and students access to personalised schedules, messaging, resources and progress reports via a simple mobile app.
